Infertility in the UK

by health writer Arjun Sandhu

According to the findings of the International fertility research, UK residents receive fewer fertility treatments in comparison with just about any other European country.

Only a negligible amount out of such procedures is beared by the National Heatlth Service (NHS), making it unaffordable for many.

Problem of infertility is very prominent in UK. Infertility occurs when an embryo fails to form due to non- fertilization between an egg and a sperm.

From the age of 13 onwards a female’s reproductive system starts preparing for conceiving or becoming pregnant .On a monthly basis there is a regular cycle of formation of a number of eggs out of which only one matures. A woman conceives when a sperm penetrates through her uterus into the fallopian tube and meets the matured ova (egg). The fertilized egg trickles down and gets implanted on the endometrium. Here the embryo starts developing.

In this normal course, some irregularities do happen. The reasons for this could be- hereditary or some ill health. This condition is visible in people achieving a menopause before the appropriate time. Over and under weight and excessive exercise can affect hormonal balance which may cause infertility too. Some diseases like multiple cysts or intake of fungicides, herbicides and insecticides can result in non – implantation of egg. Medicines rarely bring about female infertility. Also clogging of pelvis with tissues, some earlier surgery, fibroids and infection in the female reproductive system are common causes. Certain male produce a low level of sperms which becomes an important factor for male infertility. Hormonal disorders, some previous infection, exposure to excessive heat, environmental factors (x-rays, heavy metals) contribute to this problem.

Every problem has a solution and same is the case here. You need not take this as stigma on your life. The most available help could be discussing issues with an expert. An expert may advise certain tests that can detect your problem. Fertility tests could be either for semen production or proper ovulation. Infertility may be observed with the increase in the age of a woman. A woman has half the chances to conceive cross 30s than cross 20s.

Generally disorders in male and female infertility can be treated with fertility drugs, especially the hormonal ones, but in case this is not effective there are techniques of infertility treatment. It is a process in which fertilization of the egg with sperm takes place externally, generally known as in vitro fertilization. This method has gained much importance recently with upcoming of better techniques in this field showing successful results. IVF is not only an answer to the infertility due to a sick fallopian tube but for other situations as well like introduction of sperms to treat male infertility. There are many fertility clinics in UK where this method of IVF is performed safely.

IVF is done by first stimulating the ovary to produce follicles of the ovaries. This is done by means of gonadotropic hormone. A fertility calendar is set up to observe the various phases in the process. The change in the level of hormones is monitored by gynecologic ultrasonography . This is followed by extraction of the egg from the ovary. The IVF laboratory treats both the egg, which is extracted from egg donor and the sperms from semen taken from male partner. Through a sterile medium they are made to fertilize. The successful embryos are implanted in the prepared uterus so that egg implantation is achieved.

It is well known that every new invention has its own good or bad similarly is the case here. Certain complications may arise after IVF procedures but they are rare. Sometimes it may result in multiple pregnancy therefore there are stringent norms to carry out IVF. The chance of splitting of the embryo in the womb is less. IVF also leads to some chromosomal abnormalities assisted with organ deformation. An answer to this has still not been found.

However certain pre-conception precautions should be kept in mind. A healthy diet supplemented with folic acid and a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables are advisable. Smoking, intake of alcohol, street drug and exposure to excessive heat must be avoided. Weight should be regularly monitored. There are many objections to this process of egg donation but it is as of today, a good answer.
